Description
Two ink and watercolor sketches on thin wove paper, seated Tahitian woman (signed with the artist's initials), portrait of a Tahitian boy (stamped with the artist's initials), attributed* to Paul Gauguin (1848-1903). Each measures approximately 6 x 4 1/2 inches. Both drawings were removed from a small sketchbook originally containing over 100 drawings, sketches, and watercolors. The sketchbook was apparently broken up many years ago and some of the drawings were dispersed. Both are in overall good condition. Unframed for inspection and post-auction shipping.
Provenance: Property originally from a private Southwest collector.
Preston Hall Gallery sold a work attributed to Paul Gauguin on March 10, 2015, from the same collection as the present lot. Subsequently, that drawing sold at Sotheby's, Paris, on June 1, 2016, Lot 79, in the amount of $33,428. It was authenticated prior to sale by the Wildenstein Foundation.
