Description
‘The Peony Lantern’ is a ghostly romance adapted from an old Chinese tale. Tsuyu, or ‘Morning Dew’, was the daughter of an influential samurai. She fell in love with Shinzaburo, but prevented from seeing him, she and her maidservant pined away and died. On the evening of the Bon Festival of the Dead, two ladies passed by Shinzaburo’s house carrying a lantern decorated with peony flowers. To his amazement, he recognized Tsuyu and her maidservant and as the women continued to visit him every night, Shinzaburo and Tsuyu became lovers. The story ends with Shinzaburo found dead, his body entwined with the bones of a young woman, the real shape of deceased Tsuyu. In the print we see the cadaverous young lady hurrying to their nightly meeting. Her robes are pale pastel shades and the printing is light, appropriate for the twilight creature. Tsuyu’s kimono is beautifully embossed. The lines of the baren tool used for printing gives the print a smoky background and a more supernatural atmosphere.
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (Taiso) (1839-1892) was a Japanese artist often considered as the last great master of the ukiyo-e movement of woodblock printing and painting. The term ukiyo-e translates to "pictures of the floating world" and refers to a genre of Japanese art with a wide span of imagery such as kabuki actors, folk tales, landscapes, and even erotica. This movement was critical in forming the Western perception of Japanese art.
Ukiyo-e woodblock print genre of art flourished in Japan from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; and erotica. The term ukiyo-e translates as "pictures of the floating world".
