Howard Everett Smith (1885 - 1970) Mountain landscape with a house near the foreground and what appears to be a coal mine in the distance. Signed and dated '43 lower left. Oil on board. Sight size: 9.5 x 13 inches. Howard Smith studied at the Boston Museum School under Edmund Tarbell and with Howard Pyle in New York at the Art Students League. His illustrations appeared in "Harper's" and "Scribner's" between 1905 and 1913, and for several years he taught at the Rhode Island School of Design. He exhibited widely and won prizes in Boston, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.
