Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Mezcala culture (Balsas culture), ca. 700 to 200 BCE. A round stone plate with a raised, scalloped edge. The stone was shaped by artisans using string cutting techniques and would have been lightly smoothed with sandstone. Greenstone was highly valued and seems to have been iconographically related to the underworld, death, and the afterlife. A vessel like this one would have been placed into a grave of an important personage, possibly holding offerings. Size: 7.825" W x 1.5" H (19.9 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex-John Smith Collection, Roswell, GA
