Ancient Roman Bronze Statuette of Mercury c.2nd Century AD. Size of the figure 3 7/8 inches high. overall with with stand 5 3/8 inches high. A cast bronze nude standing figure of Mercury, a cloak draped over the left shoulder and arm and a petasus cap on the head, holding a bag of coins in the right hand. Mercury was not only the messenger of the gods, but the god of merchants and thieves, as well. Here he is depicted with his winged hat holding a purse to signify his connection with wealth and success in business. pitted surface otherwise in excellent condition. Provenance: NYC Collection acquired in the London Market 20 years ago.
