Description
A Boer War prisoner-of-war work cedar wood model of a crocodile, probably Bermuda, circa 1900, of articulated construction, the head with inset glass eyes and jaws agape, 71cm long During the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), the Bermudan archipelago received and housed approximately 4,600 Boer prisoners of war. During their incarceration some of these prisoners turned their hands to the production of craft objects, largely for the purposes of sale to raise funds for provisions. The model offered here is of a far more significant size than was normal, so it has been suggested might have been intended as a presentation piece
