Description
Far East, China, ca. mid 19th century CE. Quite rare and impressive, an antique Chinese architectural panel, expertly hand-carved from a large piece of inherently beautiful fruitwood of rich caramel hues, the overall arched form embellished with an elaborate figural program that depicts at center a recumbent figure beneath a nicely detailed canopied structure with a curved tile roof and billowing curtains drawn so as to reveal the reclining figure resting within, the structure framed with flowering foliage on one side and an architectural cornice on the other. In front of the structure, four full-length figures stand, one proudly facing the viewer while the three others gently bow in respect or supplication. The lower left and right termini feature large roundels that are intricately carved with attractive flowering foliage. These roundels are trimmed with a contrasting, angular Greek key border also accentuates the graceful lower arch of the piece. A very rare piece, replete with the utmost artistry and technique as well as iconography that suggests several intriguing narratives. Size: 6" deep x 43" W x 23.5" H (15.2 cm x 109.2 cm x 59.7 cm)
