Description
2nd century AD. A bronze plate brooch formed as a salmon(?) with broad, gently curved lozengiform body, small lateral fins, chevron tail, D-shaped head with large discoid eye; the body with five rows of crescent punchmarks denoting scales; hinged pin and catch to the reverse. Cf. Hattatt, R. Iron Age and Roman Brooches, Oxford, 1985, item 616. 3.89 grams, 38mm (1 1/2"). Property of a European collector; acquired Europe, 1980s-1990s. [No Reserve]
