4th-5th century AD. A tubular bone pyxis carved with a running Roman soldier in uniform and helmet, looking back to a scrolling vine with opposed palmette in pelta and scallop shells to the sides. 21 grams, 70mm (2 3/4"). Property of a Surrey collector; acquired in the early 1970s.
