Description
A Syro-Hittite ceramic figure of Astarte, c. 2000 - 1500 BC, her legs together with short arms held outwards, characteristic bird-like features, large circular eyes and angled headdress with four large holes for hair which would have been in another substance such as cord or plant material. A fringed girdle around her waist is indicated by incised hatching as are the beads in the collar around her neck, her navel indicated by a raised angled ridge around a central depression. H: 5 1/3 in (13.6cm). A nice example with light surface deposits, mounted. Ex West Sussex, UK private collection.
