Description
Early 20th century large Chinese porcelain bulbous hand painted vase, in Famille Rose enamel. This fine display piece features neck through shoulder Lotus Lappets, and scenic medallions containing a plethora of multi colored bats of good fortune. These auspicious symbols represented five bats in paintings to symbolize the “Five Blessings”; health, long life, prosperity, love of virtue, and a tranquil natural death. Often depicted in red, a sixth, the color of joy bats represent “good fortune” in traditional Chinese culture. The base mark is an apocryphal stamp of the Qianlong Era of the Qin Dynasty, in Zhuanshu script. The vase was actually potted in the post Hongxian (1916) period, the Early Republic period ca. 1919-1930. The enamels are traditional in hue for that time. Please note the black outlined figures and the bleed-over of the pine tree green enamel. These were not evident in the Qing dynasty examples, but were noted from ca. 1920 all the way to the cultural Revolution (1966-1976). This prominent vase is in excellent condition. 7x7x9" Weight pds 2 oz. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Estate.
