DRESDEN PORCELAIN AMBROSIUS LAMB EWER
Item Details
Description
A stunning ca. 1900-1910 hand gilded + Colonial courting ewer / pitcher, finished by the well known Dresden decorating studio of Ambrosius Lamb. Our exceptional ewer stands 6.25" tall, and is marked with the recognizable vaulting first D, and the descending second, with the signature horizontal right ear, denoting a potting between 1887 & 1915. The style of transfer, and the gilded accents place this excellent condition Dresden Antique between 1900 & 1910. Ambrosius Lamm opened his porcelain decorating business in 1887 and as a perfectionist only used items from renowned companies like the 'Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur' in Meissen. He mainly decorated the items in the well known 'Dresden', 'Meissen' and 'Kopenhagen' styles but around 1906 his speciality was the 'Alt-Dresden' decoration (which represents a special form of flower arrangements) as well as the wide area of Watteau-type decorations and mythology. Shortly after the year 1934, Ambrosius Lamm retired and the business was taken over by his daughter Clara, together with Rudolf Pitschke who had worked for her father before. They continued to use the same marks but seem to have ventured into other areas as well, because in 1943 the KPM Meissen appealed for court intervention, as the Lamm decorating studio had tried to sell items marked with an impersonation of the crossed swords mark. Remarkably, there is almost nothing more known about the business, with at least one source indicating that the business still existed up until 1949. This seems improbable, as the road where the studio was located had been totally destroyed during the infamous fire bombings of Dresden in 1944, sanctioned by England’s Bomber Harris.Measures 6.25" tall. Weight 11.5 oz. PROVENANCE: A Cumberland Maryland / Charleston SC Private Estate.
