Description

Coimbra, Portugal Hand Painted Blue and White Pottery Octagonal Box. Signed on the bottom by the artist. Measures 4x4x2.25". Weight is 12 oz. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Estate. Exceptional pottery production has existed in the Coimbra area since the year 1145. Documents also show early regulation since the 16th century of "malegueiros" or artisans who fired the ceramic pieces twice. The first firing was to obtain the raw white clay pottery piece and the second firing was after the decorative painting had been applied. The motifs of the Coimbra area pottery portray hunting scenes, castles, coats of arms, feathers and plumage of exotic birds, outlines of Arabian-influenced backgrounds, and many more.
