Description
Carved wooden female sculpture from the Bamana (Bambara) peoples of Mali, West Africa. The powerful forms of this Jonyeleni figure, executed in a remarkably free style, expresses the ideal image of a Bamana woman at her very highest level of physical attraction. With its large breasts projecting forward and narrow hips, this fertile and desirable woman represents the ideal which 'Jo initiates could claim at the end of their initiation. This idealized beauty is enhanced by various scarification marks which are finely carved throughout the torso. The smooth patina suggests the glistening oiled and adorned Bamana women preparing themselves to dance. Such idols were used during imitation rites and carried from village to village by the initiates, So such a sculpture was used to show the values of Jo'society. The figure must therefore be as pleasant to look at as possible. Here the sculptor shows great skill and imagination while staying within the traditional canon of these Dyonyeni sculptures. Measures 25 inches tall.
