Painted and Stenciled Wood Fireboard depicting a village with two churches, two men on horseback with hunting dogs, covered wagon, wilderness in foreground having an Indian hunting exotic beasts including a tiger, zebra and leopard. Made for the Gabriel Houston House in Sussex County, New Jersey, circa 1830. 37- 1/4" x 44- 1/2". Two vertical separations between planks.
Gabriel Houston's father, Thomas Houston, settled in Middletown, N. Y. in early life. His wife was Sarah Faulkender, who bore him ten children. Gabriel Houston was born May 25, 1798, near Middletown. He remained at home until his marriage to Susan Ann Owen, when he settled at Glenwood, N. J., on the homestead of his father-in-law, Isaac Owen, which was formerly the property of Isaac Owen's father, Ebenezer Owen, containing one hundred and eighty acres of land. On this property he lived the remainder of his life, and died Jan. 22, 1864.
