Description
Toyohara Chikanobu (1838-1912) was a prolific woodblock artist of Japan's Meiji period during the 19th century. The Meiji period was when Japan moved from being an isolated society to its modern form, the effects of which were seen in politics, economy, foreign relations, and of course, art. Chikanobu signed his artwork "Yoshu Chikanobu". This was his "art name" sakuhinmei. The artist's "real name" honmyo was Hashimoto Naoyoshi; and it was published in his obituary.
