Description
Probably New Orleans. Silver stirrup hilt with engraved rocker panel borders, also on pommel and around the crescent curves and ovoid languetes. The guard has vase and ring turnings. Tapered octagonal horn grip with green hues. The broad curved blade has a large single fuller with a motif of Lady Liberty for the American market on the obverse and a splayed eagle on the shield on the reverse with other gilt decorated motifs. The three large scabbard mounts with fine studs and rings that are joined at the bottom. These are also adorned with shallow fencing and rocker panel engraving. The black leather scabbard is nicely furnished on the back and contains pressed in flowers and diamonds between the first and second mount and broad lines with dental patterns along the bottom edge. Copy of "American Silver-Hilted Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords by Daniel Hartzler", featuring this sword will be included. Sword is featured on page 640, figure 578. Good condition; blade retains a mostly dark, heavy patina with some scattered areas of pitting and two chips at the tip, blade has been sharpened removing some of the engraved gilt designs. Hilt is very good and unpolished, showing some wear to engraved borders and scattered areas of old yellow varnish. Grip has some hairline cracks from age, a small chip at pommel on both sides and a few scattered marks on left side. Scabbard is excellent, retaining nearly all of original crazed black finish, mounted excellent. The drag needs reattached and has a few minor dents. Blade Length-31 - 3/4"; Overall Length-36 - 3/4";
