Item Details
Description
(19th century)
Henry and Elizabeth Christman, unsigned, oil on canvas, 24 x 20 in.; oval gilt wood frames,. Condition: lined with wax and linen and laid on oval panel (conservation report verso each panel), crackle, retouch; frames with abrasions. Notes: Family tradition states that these portraits were by William Sidney Mount. They seem more likely to have been executed by his brother, Shepherd Alonzo Mount (New York,1807-1868). According to the sitters great-granddaughter, "The Keen (Kyn) family lived in the New Sweden/Chester area of Pennsylvania beginning in 1648 with the arrival of Joran Kyn. His descendant, Andrew Keen was born in Philadelphia in 1752 and died in 1839. Andrew Keen's son was Alfred H. Keen. Alfred married Sarah Ann Christman. These are the portraits you have. They probably lived in the Philadelphia area. The son of Alfred and Sarah is William Howard Keen (1853-1912) . William Howard married Ann Clawson (1856-?). They went then to Martha Anne married Malcolm Arny; thence by descent in the family.". Provenance: Henry Christman and Elizabeth Christman, Philadelphia; Frederixck Lynn King; by descent
