Item Details
Description
(Pennsylvania/Britain, 1783-1872)
Mr. and Mrs. Ebenezer Stott of Petersburg, Virginia and Glasgow, Scotland (Sully #1594, #1595), she signed, middle right "TS 1831" he, with old label verso stating the work was painted in New York, oil on canvas, 30 x 25-1/8 in.; matching fine 19th century style gilt wood frames,. Condition: both lined and restretched on new stretcher, retouch, mostly in draw crackle and in backgrounds; documents with fading, not removed from frames. Notes: Sully painted two sets of portraits of Mr and Mrs. Ebenezer Stott. It is assumed that these are the pair painted in 1831 in New York but there is a strong possibility that the portrait of Mr. Stott, which was purchased in London, might be the portrait from 1830. This lot is accompanied by documents related to Ebenezer Stott, one making him a Burgess and Guild Brother of Glascow, Scotland in 1776, and describing him as a resident of Petersburg, Virginia, watercolor and ink on folded paper or vellum with illuminated borders and crest, 10 x 9-3/4 in.; the other making him a Burges of the Burgh of Dumphries, engraving with ink and watercolor, 7-3/4 x 11-1/4 in.
Literature: Listed in Sully's records as "1593. Stott Mr., "deceased from a print." Bust 1830 or "1594. Stott Mr., "deceased copied from a former." Bust 1831/1595. Stott Mrs., "copy of Portrait." Bust 1831".
