Volume I, Die Hölle (The Inferno), has 168 numbered pages and 72 of the 75 stated illustrations. Volume II, Das Fegefeuer, Das Paradies (Purgatory and Paradise), has 171 numbered pages and all remaining (60) illustrations.

The covers, red leather backgrounds with extensive gilt decoration and lettering, are scuffed, but structurally sound, with solid connections to the insides, and with the lettering unfaded. The spines are slanted, and with white library catalogue lettering toward the bottoms. There are faded ink stamps, 'Loyola Seminary Library' to the gilt page tops and bottoms. The gilt is slightly faded, but bright overall. There are no other stamps, but there are a few surface tears to the inside covers, apparently the result of the removal of some attachments. The only writing inside the books are the penned names, to each inside front cover, of Louis Attanasio, dated 1956. These volumes should have a total of 136 full page Doré illustrations. This set is missing the frontispiece portrait of Doré, and two other illustrations (15 and 20). Illustrations 1 through 5 are partly out of order, with #4 showing extensive repairs at its back, and a heavily worn tissue guard. The tissue guards are in place throughout the book, with most in very good condition. Several do have tears or creases, and a number are foxed or otherwise stained. The 133 illustrations that are present are unfaded, and with few stains to the live areas, though many have sunned or foxed borders, as do many text pages. There are a few cracked gutters, but the binding is good overall with, other than the mentioned missing illustrations, no other missing and no loose pages.
