Long before it became a luxury automobile manufacturer, the forerunner of Pierce-Arrow - Heinz, Pierce, and Munschauer - was established in 1865. The company was best known for its household items including ice boxes, bathtubs and, in particular, its delicate, gilded birdcages. After buying out the other two principals, the George N. Pierce Company was formed, and in 1896 the company began producing bicycles. Around the turn of the century, the company began experimenting with automobiles initially with steam power, and by 1904, founder George N. Pierce decided to concentrate on making larger, more luxurious cars for an upscale market.
In 1907, Pierce sold all rights to the business, and it was renamed the Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company a year later. The early years of the company saw rapid advancements, and the company would continue to prosper with the introduction of a six-cylinder engine which would become the hallmark of Pierce-Arrow. Solidly built, extremely reliable, and finished with a great amount of attention to detail, the Pierce-Arrow was one of the finest cars of its day with luxury and quality second to none. Catering to an upscale clientele, it was also very expensive, costing over twice as much as a comparable Cadillac of the same period.
The Series 36 was the flagship for Pierce-Arrow in 1927 and 1928, and it was the most expensive car Pierce-Arrow offered in 1927 and at a then-staggering price of $7,500. The Series 36 featured aluminum bodies fitted over northern white ash frames along with steel fenders and hoods. Under the hood was the legendary Dual-Valve Six. Displacing 414 cubic-inches, it was an inline six-cylinder engine fitted with a T-head incorporating four valves per cylinder. Originally designed in 1918 by David Fergusson, the engine featured dual camshafts, two spark plugs per cylinder, and a Delco dual-ignition system using two coils mounted on the firewall and a single dual-distributor unit with two distributor caps to fire the spark plugs.
It is believed that a total of 1900 examples of the Series 36 were produced in 15 different body styles from the factory, making any Series 36 a rare car. However, this particular car is a custom bodied coupe by Judkins, making it the rarest of the rare. This is the only known Judkins Coupe on the Series 36 chassis. The car can be traced back to a junk yard in Utica, New York in the early 1940s, and it was later acquired by the late John Porbeck. As a known Pierce-Arrow enthusiast and active club participant, it served as a centerpiece to his Pierce-Arrow focused collection. He made the decision to give the Judkins Coupe a complete and professional restoration which would take place over a period of two years. He chose marque specialist, Mike Manns of Manns Restorations in Festus, Missouri. The outstanding restoration amounted to the substantial cost of $170,000. With an eye on originality and correctness, the car was restored to its original chassis and body colors.
Upon completion, the Pierce-Arrow earned a prestigious Lion Award at the Meadowbrook Concours and, in 2008, it won a coveted _Best in Class_ at the Pierce-Arrow National Meet in Lexington, Kentucky. In short, it is a very fine example of a very rare car correctly restored to its original factory specifications. According to the Pierce-Arrow Society, this is the only 1927 Judkins Coupe in existence and offers excellent and noted ownership history, exclusivity and perhaps most importantly, usability.
