On the reverse unreadably stamped by a Parisian art supplies and with label 'Anti Ponce p. le pastel / P.L. Breveté. – Paris' on a tape on the stretcher frame

The beautiful pastel of a young elegant lady by the famous Russian portrait painter is characterized by the focus of only a few colors
Condition:
The pastel is in good condition, consistent with age. It bears slight rippling and three of the edges show in each case one tear (c. 3-8 cm). There are scattered traces of wiping overall and foxing marks can be seen upper right. In the right part of the background and in the lower part (figure) are a little bit larger white marks. The frame shows usual signs of age and wear and scattered tears and small loss of material.
Konstantin Egorovich Makovsky (1839-1915)
Konstantin Makovsky was a native from an artistically talented family. His two brothers Vladimir and Nikolay were also painters. From 1851 to 1857 he was first educated at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He then attended the Imperial Academy in St. Petersburg. In 1867 he received the title of an academic and was appointed professor in 1869. He was also a co-founder of the artist association ‘Peredvizhniki’ (The Wanderers). Today, his works can be found, for instance, at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the Russian Museum in Leningrad and the Art Institute in Chicago. (msc)
