Description
English, early 19th century. A carved oak wall hanging mirror, having a squared frame with a domed top, carved with grape leaves, clusters, and vines, carved with the words "DUM SPIRO SPERO" (Latin meaning 'While I breathe, I hope') and topped with a carved Lyttleton family crest with three scallop shells divided by a chevron line, flanked by acanthus leaves over a banner readed "DUM SPIRO SPERO," centered with a vertically oriented oval mirror surrounded by painted gilt roping, with four spandrels, the upper two carved with ivy leaves and the lower with sheaves of wheat. Unmarked. Approximate height 55.25", width 42", depth 2.1". Provenance: From the Estate of a prominent publisher and philanthropist, Greenwich, CT.
