Agnes Martin (1912-2004)
Agnes Martin was born in Canada. In 1931 she moved to the USA, where she studied and taught. Her first solo exhibition at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York in 1957 made her famous in the art world. Her highly reduced works, geometrically arranged with fine lines, grit structures and delicate colors aim for expressing essential emotions such as happiness, love, harmony in a kind of absolute painting, thus representing a combination of Minimal Art and Abstract Expressionism. The artist took part in the documenta exhibitions 5 and 6 in 1972 and 1977. Also in 2007 works by her were shown at documenta 12. In addition, there are works in prestigious museums such as the Guggenheim Collection and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery, London, and the K20 in Düsseldorf. (fea)
