Description
Front wrap states "MOUNTED ON LINEN" at top edge. Rear wraps list 42 titles in Aunt Louisa's Big Picture Series, of which this is one, followed by advertisements for new paper dolls, then Dolly Varden Dolls, and then Chiromagica. A worn but complete early printing of this McLoughlin Brothers' Big Picture Book featuring Thomas Nast's now iconic renderings, both in color plates and black and white vignettes, of the eponymous character, an important stage in the development of St. Nick in the American imagination. Webster and Nash invite children to imagine Santa Claus in his red suit, manufacturing toys, decorating a Christmas tree, observing children through a spy-glass at the North Pole, consulting his lists of good and naughty boys and girls, and filling stockings, with a sack of gifts slung over his shoulder.
