Item Details
Description
  • Item: Vintage Photograph Album of Bert Mallory
  • 63 attached photo, 18 loose images, 81 photos total
  • Size: 3.25 x 4.25 inches to 12.25 x 5.25 inches
  • Markings: Front cover has an ink number "7" in its upper right corner.

Includes old sports photos of Toledo, Ohio athletes - baseball, basketball, track, and football. Some images are attached to album pages with photograph mounting corners. Others are unmounted and/or became loose from album pages. Like many early 20th century stand-out athletes, Bert Mallory apparently played multiple sports before landing a spot on this professional basketball team. These images are quite early in the history of professional basketball and scant information is available however I did find that the Red Men Tobaccos were a member of both the National Basketball League and the American Basketball League. During the 1929/1930 NBL playoffs they were the NBL Champions.

Some photographs have ink written identification on their fronts including:
  • "Bert Mallory - Redman Tobaccos '27 - '28 Season" (A brief on line research reveals that the Toledo Redmen were an American basketball team located in Toledo, Ohio. At one time they were also known as the Toledo Red Men Tobaccos.)
  • "Ike Seabert" ( appears to be a football referee?)
  • "Miller Rubber Co. 1920 Akron, Ohio" "Suey Welsh, Cecil Kennedy, Parker Lowell". (On line research identifies Suey Welsh as the manager of black middleweight boxing champion, "Gorilla Jones" - one among several fighters he managed.)
  • "Ed Cannon" (online research shows he was the manager and promoter of the Redman Tobaccos Basketball team.)
  • "Al Clause" basketball player
  • "Paul Schoenfeldt - Ohio State" track
  • "1912 Central High School" basketball team
  • Mather Spring Co. baseball player
  • A letter to mother from "James Perkins Thorpe"
  • Classmate Group Photos

It is interesting that an image of boxing promoter Suey Welsh of Akron Ohio appears in this archive. Perhaps manager Al Cannon tapped into his friend's street saavy talents as a more experienced sports promoter to better market his fledgling professional basketball team? The James Perkins Thorpe letterhead is loosely inserted in the album and puzzles me. The well known Native American Jim Thorpe played football at Carlisle PA and recent information surfaced that he also played for an undetermined "barnstorming" basketball team in Ohio. I cannot find confirmation of a connection to the letterhead with the "Perkins" name association....was it a middle name? Mother's maiden name? no connection at all? Is Jim Thorpe's Indian ancestry and Ohio basketball connection merely a coincidence to this possibly unrelated letter included in this "Redmans" basketball team grouping? (This grouping would benefit from further research by someone more experienced in the history of Basketball.) The album appears to be part of a larger grouping as pages are numbered in the upper right corner with this album's first page numbered "39".
