Description

Item: Mother Mary and Child Jesus Russian Icon

Date: 19th century

Materials: Painted board, gold washed tin oklad, red velvet backing

Size: 6.75 x 8.75 inches

The oklad on this icon has a couple of deep scratches, one on either side of the figures, and a small tear near the center top, please see pictures. The gold was has mellowed to a bronze color and no attempts have been made to clean or polish. The only painted portions that are visible through the oklad are the faces of Mary and Jesus, her right hand, and the hands and feet of child Jesus. The painted details of the faces of Mary and Jesus are exceptional. The oklad is wrapped around the edge of the board and nailed in place. The backing is red velvet, the color still remains a vivid red, and there is one old metal ring on the upper back to hang on the wall.
