Item Details
Description
Year after year, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, used to hand out Matzot and wine: before Passover he would hand out Matzah Shemurah and on Yom Tov Sheni shel Galuyot, he would give all the attenders a little wine from "a cup of Beracha" of Havdalah. On various occasions, the Rebbe had on his table small wine bottles, which he would give his Shluchim, managers of institutions and the like. On Passover he would hand out wine bottles. On other Holy Days (Simchat Torah and Shavu'ot) he would hand out bottles of "Smirnoff" vodka.
In Sefer Ha'Minhagim (Book of Customs), the following passage appears: "the REbbe Shalita used to hand out Matzah Shemurah on Passover eve after Mincha, wearing the silk attire and sash of Sabbath and Yom Tov". A footnote states that "this was the custom of the Rebbe Rayatz in his old age".
Indeed, the custom of handing out Matzah, which the Rebbe Rayatz applied only with single outstanding people, the Lubavitcher Rebbe continued and expanded so that eventually, thousands of Hassidim and friends of Chabad received it from his hands. The first time th eREbbe handed out Matzah to his Hassidim was on Passover 1951, immediately after he became Rebbe. From then on, until 1977, the Rebbe himself would hand out Matzah to his Hassidim on Passover eve (from then on, the Avrechim of the Kollel would do it). To some, the REbbe gave a whole Matzah; to others, only pieces.
Before giving the Matzah, the Rebbe would ask its receiver if it will be eaten on Leil Ha'Seder. If the reply was negative, the Rebbe would replace the whole Matzah with a piece of Matzah.
