The present acrylic painting is the work of K.R.H. Sonderborg, and dates from 1989. It is a composition of the artist’s mature creative period. The artist of Danish descent is considered one of the most important proponents of the German Informel. He is also known for his own, ‘timeless’ style, which sometimes becomes figural, as visible in the present ink drawing. The dynamic and meditative work is also reminiscent of the ‘Action Painting’, and the artistic movement of the ZEN 49 group. Sonderborg himself rejected any interpretation about his works and merely indicated when and where they were created.



Condition:

The painting is in very good condition. The stretcher measures 130 x 105 cm and the dimensions of the frame are 135 x 99.5 cm.



K.R.H. Sonderborg (1923-2008)

Born in Denmark, the painter K.R.H. Sonderborg (Kurt Rudolf Hoffmann) is considered an important artist of the German Informel. Despite the art historical association with this movement, the artist preserved his own style. From 1965 to 1990, Sonderborg was professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. From 1969 to 1970, he was a visiting professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and, in 1986, a visiting professor at the Art Institute in Chicago. Sonderborg participated in the documenta in Kassel in 1959 and 1964. (tm)
