Description
A mid 19th century Victorian Brass-mounted Coromandel Veneer Traveling Games Box by Toulmin & Gale. Rectangular shape with hinged top and pair of doors opening to a backgammon/checkerboard and 32 ivory chess pieces; two removable trays and compartmented base fitted with 30 ivory checkers, dominoes, dice, cribbage board, Japanese whist, Bezique, circular and other game markers, and playing cards. Inset brass plaque reads "Toulmin & Gale Makers, London", and impressed English Registry mark within indicates November 1869 manufacture. Lacking one peg marker for the cribbage board; red tooled leather is very worn; the exterior veneer has several cracks, longest of which is approximately 8" at the back side of the lid; small area of veneer loss at the side of the lid and several repairs to the veneer at the front and corners.
