Description
18th century AD. A large cast bronze crotal bell, spherical in form with circumferential lip, two holes to the upper face, suspension loop; sound bow to the underside with radiating petals and central disc, initials 'RW' to each side (for Robert Wells); stamped below the loop '8'. 315 grams, 88mm (3 1/2"). From an old Hampshire collection; found River Thames foreshore, London, 1976. The Wells Foundry was established in 1755 by Robert Wells (born 1725), at Aldbourne. Robert ran the foundry until his death in 1781, latterly working with his son, also Robert (born 1756). Robert Junior worked with his younger brother, James (born 1771), from circa 1790. When Robert retired in 1798, he left James in charge. The business prospered for many years but in 1825 it went bankrupt and was sold to the Whitechapel Foundry. The only initialled crotal bells attributable to the Wells foundry are marked ‘RW’, probably still produced during the period when James was in sole charge. The number '8' denotes the largest size of crotal bell in production. [No Reserve]
