Description
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Proto Mayan with Olmec influence, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. Carved from a beautiful jade stone of blue-green hues, a pendant depicting a standing figure with string cut arms and facial features, biconically drilled on the back of the head for suspension. This piece is unusual, because Mayans typically used the natural contours of the stone to create reliefs of visages and figures rather than carve figurines like we see in this example; this practice more typical of the Olmec. A special Proto-Mayan figural jade pendant demonstrating Olmec influences as well as strong artistry and technique. Size: 2.125" L x 1" W (5.4 cm x 2.5 cm)
Jade was both rare and prized in the Pre-Columbian world. Carving the stone required expert technique, because jade was the second hardest mineral (the hardest being emery) of Mesoamerica. In order to cut, carve, and drill jade pieces like this, ancient artisans created their own tools that were also made of jade as well as string saws and leather strops. Scholars estimate that it would have taken hours and hours to carve a figure like this.
