The depiction of a bacchante with panther refers to the Greek mythology: The artist started to paint mythological scenes at the beginning of the 1920s. One of his first works was the Judgement of Paris.

Condition:
The painting is in good condition. It shows a few tiny losses of color overall and minimal losses of material to the lower edges. Under UV light are scattered small retouched spots. The frame bears usual signs of age and wear.

Leo von König (1871-1944)
Leo von König studied around 1890 at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Berlin before he changed to the Académie Julian in Paris. Years of travel brought the artist among others around Germany and to Russia, England and France. After that, von König settled down in Berlin and became a member of the 'Berliner Secession'. Among his friends were famous colleagues and personalities such as Ernst Barlach, Georg Kolbe, Gerhart Hauptmann as well as Julius Meier-Graefe. The oeuvre of the artist is guided by the French impressionism and by his enthusiasm for the art of the Mannerist painter El Greco (1541-1614). (msc)
