Reverse colored etching on glass - engraving, tinted with watercolors in a characteristic technique, attached to glass. Displays a scene from the opera Terminta, from English composer John Stanley (Charles John Stanley, 1712–1786). It was written int he early 1750's. Portrayed is a lead character in the opera. Titled underneath in margin: TERAMINTA, UNDER THE DISGUISE OF A BALLAD SINGER. The opera was largely forgotten after Stanley's death, revived in the 1950's. Teraminta is set in Cuba and tells the story of a prince, Xarino, who disguises himself as a shepherd to court the shepherdess Teraminta. This reverse glass aquatint is a very rare record of it's performance. 18th century, circa 1750-60's. Framed in a simple wooden frame, painted black.
