This is an ornate and highly decorative map of West Africa extending from Senegal to Biafra (previously part of Nigeria), filled with detail especially on the coast. The steel engraved map features four vignettes and fancy borders of the Tallis style: Christiansborg, Cape Coast Castle, Bakel, Sierra Leone and a seal as well. Engraved by J. Rapkin. Color outline.

John Tallis (1817-1876) was an English cartographic publisher. His company, John Tallis and Company, published views, maps and atlases in London from roughly 1838 to 1851.
