Title: Two manuscript documents, stating the contributions of the various states to the war effort and the number of troops supplied by each
Place Published: Connecticut?
Publisher:
Date Published: Late 18th/early 19th century
Description:
Each document on recto of single sheet with docketing on verso, handwritten in brown ink. 24.6x20.4 cm (9¾x8").
The first document lists the funds put forward by the various colonies as requested by acts passed at the Continental Congress on Nov. 22, 1777 and May 21, 1779, with a total of $5,000,000 requested at the earlier date, and $45,000,000 at the latter, apportioned by state; the second details the number of troops furnished by each colony or state, divided by Continental and Militia. Virginia led Massachusetts slightly in financial contributions, but the latter state nearly doubled the manpower supplied by the former. The docketing on the first document notes that the information was "taken from the Connecticut Gazette published at New London."
