White, who began his artistic career painting murals for the Depression-era WPA (and designing the iconic poster for the ground-breaking 1940 American Negro Art Exhibition in Chicago) was a life-long Communist. Despite his unpopular political views and his preference for working in a black-and-white medium, his powerful and poignant drawings and paintings now rank with those of Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden
