Mostly British, struck for circulation as tradesmen’s tokens in the 1790’s. All depict a kneeling slave holding up chained arms with the plea, AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER with clasped hands on the reverses. Five of American origin are inscribed AM I NOT A WOMAN AND A SISTER with Large Cent-style reverses and date 1838. White Metal pieces bear the Golden Rule or portraits of Anti-Slavery leaders. Included are Copper, 29mm (28); Copper, 20mm. (5); White Metal, 44mm and 43.5mm, (4); White Metal, 20.4mm (14); Woman and Sister. Copper, 29mm. (3). (Total: 55 pieces). This type was widely distributed and this specialized grouping offers a unique opportunity for the variety-seeker.
