Description
Watercolour and pencil Signed, lower right 24 x 35cm (9 1/2 x 13 3/4in.) Provenance: with Richard Green, London (label affixed, verso) with Rountree Tryon Galleries, London (label affixed, verso) In 1931, after the Great Carmo closed his circus, Alfred Munnings suggested to Knight that she might come to Epsom with him for a day at the races in order to find new inspiration for her work. Althought Knight, on that occasion had to decline, it was an appealing idea and shortly after she became a regular visitor. Using a hired Rolls-Royce as a make-shift studio, as depicted in the present lot, Knight began to paint the portraits of a number of Romany people whom she met during her trips to the races. Regarded as a loveable eccentric herself, it was not unusual for pairs of Romany women to pose at the open door of the Rolls-Royce, with the race day crowds in the background. IMPORTANT: This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
