Description
After John James Audubon (American, 1785-1851), "Goosander I", no. 67, pl. CCCXXXI, from Birds of America, hand-colored aquatint engraving by Robert Havell, verso watermarked "J Whatman/1836", sheet 25-1/2" x 38". Glazed, matted and framed.
Condition
There is 1-1/2" repair in the print to the lower left area of the water. Two small tears are present to the lower left edge with some very small scattered losses to the upper and lower edges. There are two surface scratches to the print - though they create a visible indentation to the surface under raking light, they do not perforate the pigment; the first (3") is located in the water below the swimming Goosander, and the second (2") is beneath the male's beak. Light scattered foxing and toning is present throughout. The sheet has been trimmed at lower and upper margins. Condition issues are minimal and are as to be expected with age and medium.
