Description
An outstanding vintage original hand painted Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre Plate "Imps on A Bridge", circa 1920s. Each plate is hand-painted and thus unique unto itself "Imps On A Bridge" is a work of the 20th century designer, Daisy Makeig-Jones, who celebrates story-telling and make-believe through the use of fanciful images, brilliant colors and imaginative detail. Her best works were produced from 1915 - 1930 by Wedgewood. In "Imps on A Bridge", the artistry of Daisy Makeig-Jones is seen both in the elaborate designs she created and in their artful and technically masterful execution. Much of her work was based on illustrations from popular children's books of the time, but was also known to accompany her work by fascinating written tales of her own. From an historic perspective, Wedgewood Fairyland Lustre foreshadows the popularity of cartoon animation done by such artists at Walt Disney in productions like "Fantasia". Add this true collectors piece of 20th century design to your collection today. - SIZE: 10 3/4 inched diameter. - ESTATE CONDITION; THAT IS, NO CHIPS, CRACKS, SCRATCHES OR REPAIRS (checked under black-light). Background: The Fairyland Lustre design was created by Daisy Makeig-Jones. She started her career at Wedgwood in 1909. Between 1916 and 1941 she was chiefly responsible for the creation and expansion of the Fairyland Lustre line. You could buy something from the line as late as 1941. However, production basically halted in 1931 due to the global recession. Only 14 of the 101 pattern designs were available for sale after 1931. Most of the most important Lustre pieces were executed in the 1920s. Fairyland Lustre is popular today because it is completely different not only from what Wedgwood was making at the time, but it was a totally unique look. Most of the china used black or orange as the background color. It was then decorated with fairies, elves, goblins, and ghosts of all colors and sizes.
