This tranquil view of cottages along a mill pond dates from around 1890, and is in the Continental/French style. There is a woman near the shore, and beyond we can see a hill with farmers in a field. The painting is signed in the lower left corner with the initials "JM" but so far I have not been able to identify whose initials they are. The painting is an impressive example of late nineteenth century European painting, showing bucolic country life. The scene is a restful escape from the fast-paced lives of those caught up in the Industrial Revolution. The canvas is presented in its original ornate frame, which shows some wear and has a bit of missing ornament, which is almost not noticeable. (See the photo.) The canvas itself is in good, restored condition and shows very well. Together, they have a wonderful warm presence. Painting size= 16" x 24", Frame= 23" x 31"
