Description
A Mississippian Deer Effigy Bowl
c. 1000 - 1400 AD
The rectangular vessel with pie crust banding on the rim forms the body of a seated deer with the head extending from the rim, the legs in relief on the front, back, and underside, and a small tail exposed at the back. The example is an unusual one, with squared and block-like features. It would have served as a container for food offerings needed in the after-life.
Length: 8 ¾ inches
