Please note that this item has a reserve. Well known for his abstract work, Kline's early work had a sense of spatial dimensions which is clearly how in this piece as well. You can see the angular lines mostly if you look from the sides as lines meet in the painting forming a large angle. In 1940 Kline was hired by the owner of a local watering hole on Bleeker Street, the Bleeker Street Tavern, to paint a series of decorative murals to enhance the atmosphere and promote a more lively and exciting atmosphere in his popular but assuming bar in Village. Kline was instructed by the owner to “Paint me girls" and this is what he did. The current owner of the painting who used to be an antiques and art dealer, purchased the painting over 40 years ago when owning an antique store in Burbank, CA. The painting was all yellow and dirty which later he found out was due to heavy smoking in the bar. He had the painting restored and could see Kline's signature on the lower right in red. He believes that the painting was part of the mural made of 10 pieces for the Bleeker Street Tavern. However, there is a strong possibility that the painting was done for another buyer and this is for only one single reason: most of the paintings from the mural are measuring 40" X 40" while the sight of this painting measures 35.5" X 29.5". Framed measures 48” X 40". It is a magnificent piece of art with some wear at the edges and will need some professional work to re-stretch the canvas and enhance the real beauty. Notice on the back the letters NYC written in pencil but quite faded.
