Description
Oil on canvas Signed and dated f , lower right, titled to canvas, verso 45.5 x 66cm (17 7/8 x 26in.) Provenance: with The Dawson Gallery, Dublin (label affixed, verso) McGuinness studied painting, under Patrick Tuohy and design with stained glass artist Harry Clarke at the metropolitan School of Art in Dublin, today known as the National College of Art and Design. Her interest in both painting and design created a wonderfully intriguing interaction between the two fields that led to define her unique style and focus. McGuinness was prolific in the Dublin art scene and surrounded herself with an important and influential circle of female artists including Mainie Jellet, Mary Swanzy and May Guinness. The present lot is an example from her later career. It represents her move away from a fauvist inspired colour palette working with more subdued and earthy colours inspired by her experimentations with the Irish landscape. Her work in the 1960s was distinctive for statement planes of colour, strong dark outlines and the juxtaposition between straight and curved lines. IMPORTANT: This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.
