Provenance: The Byrnes Children Trust, England

In the 1740s, Meissen's master modeler, Johann Joachim Kaendler, developed a variety of designs for coffee and tea services, whereby he derived forms and shapes from nature. At that time for example, the famous snowball blossom vase with sculptural flower decor was created. In this context offered service was presumably also designed, which becomes evident upon closer investigation of the sugar box’s handle, which is embellished with sculptural flowers. The painting follows the decoration pattern developed by Johann Gregorius Höroldt as early as 1724, yet lacks the framing cartouches. Instead of these, circulating gold lace trims decorate the edges of the vessels or the inner sides. Wells and lips show figurative chinoiseries. An exuberant richness of detail like it was done in the early period is no longer too pronounced here, but resemblances to Höroldt’s drawings, which can be found in his model book for the chinoiseries (so-called ‘Schulz-Codex’) assembled from 1724 to 1726, are unmistakable. The colorful imagery corresponds to the style of the late Christian Friedrich Herold.

The service comprises following individual pieces:

1 tea pot and cover

1 chocolate pot and cover

1 milk / water jug and flat cover

1 sugar bowl and domed cover

1 tea caddy and cover

1 double handle beaker with saucer

4 coffee cups with saucers

4 tea bowls with saucers

1 bowl

1 shaped octafoil teapot stand

Condition:

All pieces are altogether in a good condition, consistent with age and bearing usual signs of wear. In places the gilding is worn. Smaller chips and tiny hairline cracks can be seen occasionally. In parts corrections to the gilding or supplements are visible, the latter in the area of the flowers at the sugar bowl’s handle. Jug with a small fissure at the lower part of the handle. The mounts are later additions.
