[Lee Harvey Oswald]: Arresting Officer Sgt. Gerald Hill Sport Jacket. Famed Dallas Police Sgt. Gerald Hill's sport jacket worn throughout his eventful shift of duty on November 22, 1963. Hill was the lead officer in the historic sniper-perch discovery and Lee Harvey Oswald theater arrest. He wore this jacket as well during the post-arrest press interview, identifying Oswald as a charged suspect in Officer Tippit's murder and the lead suspect in the JFK assassination. On the morning of November 22, 1963, while President John F. Kennedy was in town for a two-day visit, Dallas Police Sgt. Gerald Hill was engaged in "desk duty" while much of the city lined the streets to watch visiting President John F. Kennedy pass by in a festive motorcade. At 11:30 A.M., Hill received the phone call that forever changed his life. Three gun-shots, two of which struck President Kennedy while riding in the convertible limousine, were believed to come from the nearby Texas Schoolbook Depository. Immediately responding, Hill arrived to the scene within seconds by foot, assembling a team of armed officers to enter, investigate and, if necessary, apprehend. Methodically combing the building, Hill and several of his men made a monumental discovery on the sixth floor at 1:12 P.M.. Three spent shell casings were found by an open window, amid boxes arranged to shield what appeared to be a sniper's perch. A photo of Gerald Hill taken immediately after the discovery pictures the Dallas police sergeant leaning out the open window, signaling for need of a forensic support team. Shortly thereafter, Hill and his men found a freshly-fired rifle hidden amongst a cluster of boxes not far from the open window. Minutes after the discovery of the rifle, Hill's team received a radio report of a suspicious man seen entering a nearby movie theater in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas. Once again, Sgt. Hill takes immediate action, arriving at the Dallas Theater in only minutes. Hill assembles a team comprised of responding police officers and one FBI agent, and enters the theater. At approximately 1:50 P.M., after a violent and near-deadly struggle, Hill and his team apprehend and handcuff the suspect, who is then taken to police headquarters for questioning. At approximately midnight, members of the press are finally given access to photograph the suspect and ask questions of the Dallas Police Department. Having previous experience as a television reporter, the DPD selects Sgt. Gerald Hill to address the media and the nation, identifying the suspect as Lee Harvey Oswald of Dallas, Texas. It has been a long and incredible day for this committed police officer. He is seen in surviving footage addressing the media, still clad in the tweed sport jacket pictured on him earlier at the Texas Schoolbook Depository. The lead officer for both response teams, Hill is also the only member of the DPD to have served at both of these key police calls on November 22, 1963. And yet, come midnight, he faithfully provides one final service, still dressed in the attire in which he arrived at police headquarters earlier that previous morning.
