Description
War of 1812: Snuff Boxes of American Interest. 3.5" papier-mâché snuff box with hand-painted engraving on the lid titled: "Treaty of Ghent December 25th 1814." America, seen as an Indian maiden, directs British representatives to sign the treaty, as Britannia weeps. Very nice condition with some spots of soiling or abrasion in the central portion. Sold together with a hand-painted tin snuff box in book form, measuring 2" x 3" x 1", depicting "Morris" on the cover (loss to one eye). Lt. Charles Morris (1784-1856) had a very distinguished naval career, but is most noteworthy for his role in the battle of the Constitution versus the Guerrière. A charming piece of folk art.
