Description

War of 1812: Battle of Chippawa Powder Horn. 16" engraved powder horn owned by a Scottish soldier stationed in Canada during the War of 1812. The lower part depicts a standing solider with musket, royal crown labeled "G R" (George III), a thistle and military display inscribed "1st Bat. Embodied Militia 1814" and a wreath and scroll inscribed "Chippewa Creek". The Battle of Chippawa occurred on July 5, 1814 and was part of an American invasion of Upper Canada along the Niagara River. It, along with the subsequent Battle of Lundy's Lane, were American victories that proved regular U.S. troops, properly trained and equipped, could hold their own against the British. Winfield Scott is credited with both victories. The 1st British Regiment were known as the Royal Scots. The horn is in great condition and includes a mini-horn measure attached with modern cord.
