Description
  • Print: Sevres Porcelain
  • Published: French manufacturer, Sevres
  • Medium: Chromolithograph
  • Date: 18th century
  • Size: 13 x 9.5 inches

This plate is from a series of British chromolithographs produced by the famous French manufacturer, Sevres. Porcelain de France was manufactured by Sevres during the 18th century until it was replaced by a different line of material in 1804. The prints capture the rich colors and gold tones of painted and gilded cups, saucers, tea services, vases, jardinières and other decorative objects. The complete set of 50 plates was originally issued over a year-long period in ten installments, and it was used for reference by decorative arts designers and collectors. Notably, the set’s value as a reference and decorative work is still recognized today; it was reprinted as a book by Studio House, London in 1988. Sevres had its beginnings as a ceramic company founded in Vincennes in 1738; it then was moved to Sevres, France in 1756, for which it was named. Louis XV was one of its major investors. Until the 1780's the company had a monopoly on the manufacture of painted and gilded porcelain. In addition to Louis XV and Louis XVI, aristocratic patrons of the company included Madame du Barry and Catherine the Great of Russia. The ceramics produced included fine figurines, large elaborate vases, and plaques incorporated as decorative panels on furniture. The company continued to operate through the 19th century.
